Members of the same family were the 10 people on board a small plane killed when it crashed into shops in the center of the southern tourist town of Gramado today Brazilcivil protection service officials said.

The victims are businessman Luis Claudio Salgueiro Galeaci from the state of Sao Paulo (south) and nine of his relatives who were traveling with him, police confirmed to AFP.

Pilot was the businessman himself and there are no survivors. Seventeen other people were injured on the ground, two of them seriously, according to the agency.

The plane reportedly struck first the chimney of a building, then the second floor of a house, before crashing into a furniture store, authorities said.

The causes of the accident are being investigated.

The plane was one Piper Cheyenne 400which had taken off from the neighboring municipality of Canela and crashed minutes after take off.

Gramado, located in a mountainous area, is the most popular tourist destination in Rio Grande do Sul, which was hit earlier this year by unprecedented flooding that killed dozens of people, damaged infrastructure and dealt a major blow to the state’s economy.

The accident occurred just days before Christmas, a particularly busy time for the city, which is decorated with traditional decorations and hosts festive events.
