The first opinion poll conducted after the attack on Magdeburg’s outdoor Christmas market shows little change in party numbers. The chancellor, however, continues to lose popularity, as does Christian Democratic Party (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, while federal interior minister Nancy Fesser (SPD) is now among the losers.

According to the poll by the INSA Institute on behalf of the BILD newspaper, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) maintains its clear lead with 31% (-0.5) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) seems to have stabilized in second place ) with 19.5% and no change in its percentages. They are followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 16% (-0.5), the Greens with 12.5% (+1), the Zara Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) with 8% also unchanged, the Free Democrats (FDP) in threshold for entering the Bundestag with 5% and no change and the Left with 3% (+0.5).

As the head of the INSA Institute Hermann Binkert points out, these percentages would not be sufficient for a CDU/CSU – Greens coalition government, while the AfD and the FDP seem to be increasing their percentages recently.

In the question of the popularity of politicians, the most popular is the Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius (SPD), with a percentage of 53.4% and no change, followed by the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and Prime Minister of Bavaria Markus Zeder and the Prime Minister of North – Hendrik Wust of Rhine-Westphalia. Friedrich Merz is in 6th place with 39.8% and a downward trend, while Chancellor Olaf Solz, with 33.7% and also a downward trend, is limited to 18th place.

He is followed by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Fesser, who appears to be shouldering much of the blame for the Magdeburg market attack.
