Kyriakidou: Immediate registration and support of unaccompanied minors from Ukraine so that they do not fall into the hands of traffickers

The EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakidou, participated today in informal video conference of Ministers of Health in which the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liasko explained the situation prevailing in his country.

He reportedly stressed the fact that “the supply and donation of vaccines through HERA and the Civil Protection Mechanism” is being considered, as he explained that vaccination coverage in the country was too low for several diseases that can be prevented by vaccination, especially in children, such as tuberculosis, polio, measles, but also COVID-19, and stressed that Member States must ensure instant recording and support of children and of unaccompanied minors arriving from Ukrainein order to avoid falling into the hands of traffickers.

“This danger is very real and it is unthinkable to let it happen,” said Ms. Kyriakidou.

He noted at the same time that on the one hand there must be assurance that all who leave her Ukraine receive the health care on the other hand, that through the European Solidarity Mechanism there is the possibility for intra-Community transport of patients to appropriate hospitals according to the needs of each patient.

THE Commissioner He explained that the hospitals “include beds for pediatric patients, for newborns and their mothers, for cancer patients, for burn victims and for those who need treatment in the ICU. “The first pediatric patients were transferred this week from Poland to Italy, where they will receive specialized pediatric care,” he said, stressing that the transfers would be co-financed and logically coordinated by the European Commission. He also pointed out that “together with the WHO in Europe and national health experts, we can set up screening nodes for patients directly at the border to make a first diagnosis, identify an urgent need and locate referral hospitals” which will speed up the transport of patients war in Ukraine and Russia’s aggression affects us all. “We must do everything in our power to provide the necessary medical assistance,” said Stella Kyriakidou.
