OR Germany starts various relief programs in Syriawith a cumulative value of 60 million euros, after the fall of the former president Bashar al-Assad on December 8, according to the Minister of Development Svenia Sulce.

“The humanitarian situation is catastrophic for the Syrian people,” Ms Schulze told the RND media group today.

He explains that the almost fourteen-year civil war has reduced much of the country to rubble, 90% of the population lives in poverty and is dependent on international aid.

Although Syria’s future remains uncertain, the 56-year-old minister in the chancellor’s government Olaf Solz he expresses restrained optimism, talks about possible positive changes and insists that there is a need to offer help to promote them.

He also clarifies that the aid programs to be financed by Berlin will be implemented exclusively by the UN and non-governmental organizations, not by the de facto new authorities.

During its services, 25 million euros will be given to UNICEF – the United Nations Children’s Fund – to support projects such as the renovation of schools and the provision of psychosocial support to children.

Another 19 million Euros will be offered to UNDP – the United Nations Development Program – in order to provide short-term employment opportunities for internally displaced Syrians, such as in debris removal.

The funding comes from the 2024 budget, in which the German government had allocated 132 million. euros for offering aid to Syria
