Russia launched an airstrike in Ukraine early Tuesday morning, hitting the capital and other areas with multiple missiles and drones.
The Air Force of Ukraine reported a ballistic missile threat at 3:00 AM. (01:00 Greek time), with at least two explosions heard at Kyiv a few minutes later. Another missile warning was issued at 8:00 AM. followed by at least one explosion in the city. Missile debris fell in the area Darnytskyi of the capital with no reports of casualties or damage, the local administration announced.
Authorities in the northeastern Sumy region reported strikes near the town of Shostka, where the mayor Mykola Noha said 12 residential buildings were damaged as well as two educational facilities. He said some “social infrastructure buildings” were destroyed, without elaborating.
The Air Force also reported targeting missiles and drones several other regions of Ukraine.
About half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure it has been damaged during the war and rolling blackouts are common and widespread.
Kiev’s Western allies have provided air defense systems to help Ukraine protect critical infrastructure, but Russia has tried to crush its air defenses with combined strikes involving large numbers of missiles and drones.
The Russian attacks come as uncertainty reigns over the nearly three-year conflict. The US president-elect Donald Trumpwho takes office next month, has pledged to end the war and has cast doubt on whether vital US military support to Kiev will continue.
On Monday, the president Joe Biden announced that the United States will send an additional $2.5 billion in weapons to Ukraine as his administration works quickly to spend all the money at its disposal to help Kiev confront Russia before Trump takes office.
