by

Dozens truck driverswaiting to load to then head to Russiahave been blocked near a Stellantis car plant in Orden of of northern France and their departure is delayed due to intensive customs controls related to sanctions against Moscow, the French group said.

Along a road in this industrial zone, trucks wait up to a week, forming an endless queue. Their drivers are, for the most part, Belarusians. They wait until they are allowed to leave for Kaluga, south of Moscow, where the group continues – but at a slow pace – to produce spare parts for the Russian market. The trucks are transporting car parts, although Stellantis has stopped all imports and exports of cars to Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

The company assured that components destined for Russia are not subject to sanctions, but should be investigated by customs officials.

“Everything was done in a few days. “The trucks were already on the road (when the sanctions were imposed), as the drivers need 8-15 days to come from Russia”, explained the press office of Stellantis.

According to Gefco, a brokerage firm that works with Stellantis, half the trucks are waiting to be approved by customs to leave. Until then, Gefco gives drivers access to showers and toilets.

Arthur, a 28-year-old Belarusian driver, said the situation was difficult: the showers were cold, the toilets closed at 9pm, Russian bank credit cards were closed and the nearest shops were within walking distance. .
