Transitional Council President Leslie Voltaire, Interim Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Eme and US Ambassador to Haiti Dennis Hawkins greeted security forces from Guatemala and El Salvador as they arrived at Port-au-Prince airport.
The multinational force is under the command of Kenya, which has deployed nearly 400 police since the middle of last year, far fewer than the 1,000 it had promised to send to Haiti. She was later joined by 24 Jamaicans and two Belizean officers.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo pledged in September to send 150 military guards to Haiti, three months after he wrote to the UN about his country’s support for the effort.
For its part, El Salvador announced in August that it would send 78 soldiers to take part in medical transport operations, as well as three helicopters – which would augment Haitian security forces in operations in difficult areas controlling heavily armed gangs.
