Area evacuations are underway today in Ethiopia, where a series of earthquakes hit the country yesterday and today, including a magnitude 5.8 earthquake.

The earthquakes are concentrated in the rural regions of Afar, Oromia and Amhara, after months of intense seismic activity.

So far there are no reports of casualties.

About 80,000 people live in the affected areas and the most vulnerable are being evacuated to temporary shelters, the Ethiopian government’s Communications Office said.

These earthquakes are increasing in magnitude and frequency“, it is pointed out in a press release of the office, where it is added that experts have been deployed to the area to assess the damage.

According to a senior official of Ethiopia’s Disaster Risk Management Committee, at least 2,000 people have already been evacuated from their homes.

The most recent of these tremors, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, occurred shortly before 12:40 local time, about 33 kilometers north of the city of Metehara in the Oromia region, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

These earthquakes have damaged homes and threatened to trigger a volcanic eruption of Mount Dofan, near the community of Segendo, in the northeastern part of the Afar region.

The volcano’s crater is no longer emitting smoke, but residents of the zone fled their homes in panic.
