At least six people were killed and more than 25 wounded in a bomb attack in southwestern Pakistan’s Baluchistan (or Balochistan) province on Saturday, according to local officials and Pakistani media reports.
The bombing, claimed by the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), targeted a convoy of paramilitary vehicles that had left Karachi for the city of Turbat. A bus was completely destroyed by the powerful explosion.
“At least six people, paramilitary and civilians, were killed in the bomb attack on a bus,” Rashid Ur Rehman, a spokesman for the police headquarters in the area, told AFP. More than 25 people were injured, according to the same official.
Another security official told AFP that authorities believed it was a suicide bomber attack.
Pakistani security forces have been fighting separatists for decades in Balochistan, a devolved province on the border with Afghanistan and Iran. In 2024, Pakistan’s armed forces reported the deaths of 383 soldiers and 925 separatists in clashes.
The separatist rebels often launch attacks against government forces and the paramilitaries who support them. Chinese interests are also in their sights, accusing Beijing of helping Islamabad exploit the region’s natural resources.
