The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is increasingly likely to announce his intention to step down, although he has not made a final decision, a source told Reuters.

Canada’s Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau is expected to announce today, Monday, his resignation as the leader of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada after nine years in power.

Trudeau’s departure will leave the party without a leader as polls show the Liberals trailing the main opposition Conservatives in an election due by the end of October.

Sources told the Globe and Mail that they do not know for sure when Trudeau will resign, but added that they expect it to happen before an emergency meeting of the Liberal caucus on Wednesday.

A growing number of Liberal MPs, alarmed by a string of dismal polls, have publicly urged Trudeau to resign.

The prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Trudeau’s schedule for today includes a meeting of the ministerial committee on Canada-US relations.

It remains unclear whether Trudeau will step down immediately or remain prime minister until he is chosen new leader of the Liberalsadds the Globe and Mail report.

Trudeau took over as leader of the Liberals in 2013, when the party was in deep crisis and had fallen to third place in parliament.

If he resigns, there will be calls for snap elections to form a stable government capable of dealing with Donald Trump over the next four years.

Trudeau has discussed with Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc the possibility of appointing an interim party leader and prime minister, a source told the paper, adding that would be unfeasible if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.

Although Ottawa spent heavily to protect consumers and businesses, running record budget deficits, that ultimately did not protect the government from the public’s wrath as prices soared.
