The 14th of March is the World Day of Mathematical Constants p and so the Guinness Book of World Records announced this Monday that scientists from Switzerland have been able to calculate π with the greatest accuracy ever achieved.
Specifically, the new record price consists of 62,831,853,071,796 digits, as confirmed by project manager Thomas Keller. In total, Keller and his team added 12.8 billion new digits to π, up from its previously estimated value.
The attempt was made by DAViS (Center for Data Analysis, Visualization and Simulation), a regional center for research, industrial solutions and education operating at the Grisnos University of Applied Sciences in Chur, Switzerland.
It took 108 days and 9 hours to complete the calculation, as well as a highly impressive computer. More specifically, the team assembled a system with two AMD EPYC processors of 32 cores each, which were equipped with 1TB of RAM and 510 TB of storage!
A total of 38 16TB hard drives were needed, 34 of which were used as swap space, while 4 have the final calculation of π.
In case you did not know, according to Wikipedia, it is defined as:
The number π is a mathematical constant defined as the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle (π = P / δ (P = circumference of a circle, δ = length of the diameter of a circle)), while to the nearest eight decimal places it is equal to 3, 14159265. It is expressed with the Greek letter π from the middle of the 18th century, although it is also sometimes written as pi.
