The US government may proceed with a “very large” amount of Taliban leaders, new Foreign Minister Marko Rubio said on Saturday, explaining that he was informed that the de facto authorities of Afghanistan are holding “more Americans” than what It was known until now.
“I just heard that the Taliban holds more American hostages than it was so far,” Mr Rubio said via X.
“If this is true, we should immediately offer a very large amount of declaration for their top leaders, perhaps even greater than what we have offered for (Osama) bin Laden,” he added, referring to the leader of the al -Qaeda terrorist organization. He was killed in a US military operation in Abotabad, Pakistan in May 2011.
The leader of US diplomats gave no other details, nor did he clarify exactly what the number of US nationals is aware of being in the hands of the Taliban, fundamentalist Sunni movement that recaptured power in Kabul on August 15th.
Last week, the Taliban announced that the US government had liberated Afghan who had been convicted of drug trafficking and extremist actions in exchange for the repatriation of two US citizens in Afghanistan.
On Tuesday, Kabul announced that this man, Han Mohammad, arrived by air after his release. A Taliban spokesman confirmed that two Americans were released.
The first of the two American citizens released is called Ryan Corbett, according to a statement by his family. Mr Corbett was held by the Taliban from 2022, according to the same source.
The second is called William McANDI, according to American press.
The Taliban recaptured power in Afghanistan in the summer of 2021 amid the chaotic and bloody withdrawal of the US troops and their allies and the collapse of the West -backed government after 20 years of war.
A prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced on Thursday that he had called for arrest warrants against two Taliban leaders, including their intellectual leader Hibatula ANANZANA, as they are accused of breach of women’s rights and women’s rights.
