With the air of the first favorite and with a very strong foursome, the National Men’s Table Tennis Team impressively passed the preliminaries in Sarajevo and next October in Croatia will be in the finals of the European Championship (Zadar 12-19/10/2025).
He progressed like a… siphon, since in the first and second stage of the qualifiers he had only wins in seven matches and “sealed” the qualification on Saturday with a 3-1 set victory against Turkey and the top of the first group. Another result in the qualifiers, apart from an undisputed course, was not accepted by the Greek group which is extremely consistent in the final stages and has a silver medal and many good positions to show in modern times.
This is how the Greek competitive presence in Sarajevo ended ideally, as the women’s national team qualified first.
The men’s national team was the first favorite and certainly showed superiority, as its executives had also admitted. To confirm it in the best way, however, is another part and the four great athletes of the younger team (Konstantinos Angelakis, Yiannis Sgouropoulos, Giorgos Stamatouros, Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos) coped exceptionally well. Their task was not easy today either, as they lost 1-0. However, they did not panic, they immediately found ways out of the pressure and “finished” the job without going to the playoffs.
With all their progress, they also showed that everyone could help equally. Our national team, number 19 in the European rating table, had progressed to the main stage with four victories in the first group, had two more on Friday and was looking for the last step against the neighbors.
Turkey (No. 25 in Europe) had progressed with second place from their group, but in the next phase they also had two wins and were “chasing” the first place. She confirmed with her appearance the progress that Turkish table tennis is showing in general, it is up to her to pass to the finals from the playoffs, Greece simply had the first say today and was determined to take advantage of the opportunity.
In detail, the evolution of the match Turkey – Greece 1-3:
Abdullah Gigenler – Yiannis Sgouropoulos 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7)
Ibrahim Guduz – Konstantinos Angelakis 1-3 (6-11, 14-12, 8-11, 7-11)
Ziver Guduz – Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos 0-3 (11-13, 9-11, 3-11)
Gigenler – Angelakis 1-3 (5-11, 12-10, 11-13, 2-11)
* The mission returns on Sunday at 15:00, but not all athletes will be on the Turkish airlines flight due to commitments with their foreign teams.
