Sanctions targeting Belarusian officials and defense companies were announced by the United Kingdom on Monday, shortly after London, Brussels and their allies jointly condemned the country’s presidential election, which installed Alexander Lukashenko for a seventh term.

Britain, the European Union and their allies on Monday condemned the presidential election in Belarus as a “fraud”.

“We are united in our condemnation of the ‘fraud’ of the presidential election in Belarus on January 26 and the ongoing human rights violations committed by the Belarusian regime,” said the joint statement issued by Australia, Canada, the EU, New Zealand and Britain.

The announcement was published on the British government website.

“The recently announced sanctions represent a coordinated, multilateral effort to hold the regime accountable (Alexander) Lukashenko,” the London government website added
