The UN Refugee Service (UNHCR) announced today that it is taking a series of temporary measures against “uncertainty” around the freezing of American aid.

“We have noted the decision of the new US government to suspend resources in assistance programs abroad,” a UNHCR’s spokesman for refugees at the French Bureau said.

“We continue to evaluate the impact of the decision of the new US government, including possible exceptions” but “we apply a series of preventive measures to alleviate the impact associated with this uncertainty in terms of funding,” he said.

As soon as he took up his duties last week for a second term, President Donald Trump ordered a 90 -day pause to re -examine most of the US donor, the world’s largest donor in dollars. The aim of the new government is to get rid of funding and programs that do not meet the presidential priorities.

Following the strong criticism of humanitarian organizations, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today expanded the exceptions provided for in the frost, stating that other forms of “humanitarian aid”, in addition to food aid, will also be excluded during the re -examination period.

The UNHCR does not yet have “specific information” on the impact of the US decision on what concerns it. However, the United States has long been the main sponsors of this UN service: in 2024, they contributed $ 2.05 billion to the total UNHCR budget of more than $ 10.6 billion.

The measures taken by UNHCR concern “travel, seminars, supplies and hiring new colleagues,” the spokesman said, recalling that the UNHCR “has been working in close cooperation with the United States for decades.”

“We look forward to actively and constructively working with the US government as a credible partner,” he said, stressing that the goal of the UNHCR is to “maximize the contribution” of its businesses around the world.
