New sanctions on Russia from Western countries – Sakharov also in the spotlight

by

The Japanese government has imposed new sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, targeting 15 individuals and nine legal entities, including defense and export officials at Rosoboronexport.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the head of the military intelligence service, and others are among those facing sanctions, including the freezing of any resources they have in Japanese jurisdiction. The aircraft also targeted United Aircraft Corp., an aircraft manufacturer. In total, 95 individuals and entities have been sanctioned by the Japanese government, including seven banks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko have also been ordered to freeze resources.

Japan continues to engage in oil and gas exploration and exploration projects on the Russian island of Sakhalin, from which Shell and ExxonMobil withdrew. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida did not clear things up, seemingly ambivalent on the one hand about their great importance for the country’s energy security and on the other his willingness to coordinate with the other G7 states in imposing sanctions on Moscow.

The Russian ambassador in Tokyo stressed on Thursday that it would be logical to continue cooperation on “mutually beneficial” energy projects in Sakhalin.

At the same time, the Australian government announced today the imposition of sanctions on the Russian Ministry of Finance and eleven other banking and public institutions in the country, covering most of the banking system and virtually all institutions that manage Moscow’s public debt.

Australian Foreign Minister Mariz Payne summed up that the country is now targeting “all Russian government entities that issue and manage Russian public debt.”
