Brazil’s attempt to build a nuclear submarine; listen to podcast

by

A report in The New York Times revealed that a couple of American spies tried to sell secrets of US nuclear submarine technology to the Brazilian government – which not only declined the offer but also reported the two to the FBI.

The couple’s choice is not unreasonable: Brazil has had a program for decades to develop a nuclear-powered submarine that can stay submerged much longer and reach longer distances. But the Navy faces technical difficulties, and the government has already tried to get cooperation from other countries, such as Russia.

In this Friday’s episode (18), Café da Manhã talks with PUC-Minas professor and member of the London International Institute for Strategic Studies Eugênio Diniz. He explains why Brazil wants a nuclear submarine so much, assesses the difficulties of this project and analyzes the government’s decision to denounce American spies.
