According to a statement issued by the UN, a conjugation of the International Organization’s Peace Mission to Lebanon (Unifil), which transported forces to Beirut Airport, was violently attacked and one of the vehicles were set on fire. The outgoing deputy commander of the force, who returned to his home after the end of his mission, was injured.

“We are shocked by this scandalous attack on peacekeeping forces, working to restore security and stability in southern Lebanon during a difficult period. Attacks by peacekeeping are blatant violations of international law and may constitute war crimes. We demand complete and immediate investigation by the Lebanese authorities and lead all the perpetrators to justice. The peacekeeping forces continue to work to restore security and stability in southern Lebanon, in accordance with our order under Decision 1701 of the Security Council »The announcement says.

A written statement was followed by the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Janin Henis-Plaction.

“Tonight’s unifil -bodily attack near Beirut Airport is unacceptable. Such an act of violence jeopardizes the security of United Nations staff, who works tirelessly to maintain stability in Lebanon, often with great personal risk.

The United Nations remains committed to cooperating with the Lebanese government and all relevant bodies to maintain stability and implement the UN Security Council Decision 1701 (2006). A complete and transparent investigation must be carried out urgently so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice. We wish Unifil colleagues involved in the incident rapid recovery, “ he said.
