The Ukrainian government has approved the forthcoming agreement with the United States to co -exploit the country’s mineral resources, Prime Minister Denis Smichal said Wednesday.
“Today, the government approves a decision necessary to sign between Ukraine and the United States of an agreement on the creation of an investment fund for reconstruction,” Smihal said in the Telegram messages.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had stated that Volodimir Zelenski’s Ukrainian counterpart would visit Washington on Friday to sign the deal, noting that Washington will not provide security guarantees.
Trump’s statement was made during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday. The US president stressed that the agreement, which he described as “very large” would include not only cooperation for rare land, but also other issues important to the two countries’ relationship.
To the crucial question of whether the United States will provide security guarantees in Ukraine, Trump responded negatively, stressing that Europe would assume this responsibility.
At the same time, Trump reiterated his commitment to ensure that the United States would take back their money.
In his placement, Trump argued that the US was in a “very bad position” because of the previous administration, noting “but we managed to make a deal where we would get our money back and earn a lot of money in the future.”
Trump said US taxpayers should not pay the Ukraine account “more than Europeans pay”.
The US president also argued that an agreement on a ceasefire is near, saying: “We will make an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people.”
Trump described the deal as “very important and great success” and told reporters who were in the room that his team would keep them informed of progress.
