Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Modenegro was today called by the opposition to explain, after revelations of a alleged conflict of interest, due to a contract between a company belonging to members of the prime minister’s family and a private casino group, whose business activities are subjected to.

In front of the revelations, Montenegro acknowledged that the situation is raising “concerns”.

He decided to convene an extraordinary cabinet for tomorrow Saturday, at the end of which he would address the citizens “to close this case once and for all,” he told Porto on the sidelines of the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Today’s report in the Expresso newspaper has revealed alleged links between a business owned by the wife and children of the Portuguese Prime Minister and the Solverde private group, who manages casinos and hotels.

According to this information, this family business provides Solverde, from July 2021, EUR 4,500 per month for specialized services, in particular in the processing of personal data.

The Portuguese Prime Minister worked for this family business from 2018 to 2022 and represented the hotel group in negotiations with the state that allowed him to extend his casino concession, Expresso said.

Montenegro became prime minister after the March 2024 elections that saw the Iberian country turn to the right, but without the absolute majority.

These revelations are “serious,” said socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santo, the opposition party. To “restore trust”, he asked the prime minister to reveal the names of his company’s customers and the nature of the contracts.

“A prime minister cannot receive money from private bodies,” said Chega far -right President Andre Ventura, stressing that the government leader should resign or seek a vote of confidence in the House.

Montenegro is committed to providing all the explanations to “dismantle speculation” and “evaluate his personal and political situation”.
