US President Donald Trump signed yesterday executive decree which establishes English as the official language in the US, with the aim of “promoting the unity” of the country.

“It is in the interest of America to define one – and only one – formal language,” he said in the decree “honoring the long tradition of multilingual American citizens, who learned English and taught them to their children,” he says. The initiative aims to “promote unity and maintain a common American culture for all citizens” in the country, it is noted.

US had not established an official language to date. The decree signed by Trump cancels out what was signed by then President Bill Clinton, which aimed to facilitate access to “citizens with limited knowledge of English” to public services.

Federal services will no longer be required to provide services to other languages other than English, but will be at their discretion.

In the past, legislative initiatives to establish an official language in the US had been rejected by the US Congress.

About 43 million people in the US speak Spanish at homeaccording to official demographics of 2023.
