A poll -referendum on the Hungarians on whether or not to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU has been announced today by the country’s Prime Minister Victor Orban, speaking to reporters following the EU’s 27 -EU leaders’ summit in Brussels.

Yesterday, the leaders of the “27” unanimously decided to strengthen their defense spending, but Hungary vetoed Kiev’s joint statement of support.

“We have the so -called system of national consultations, which we regularly use to collect the people’s opinion, so we will use the same system now,” said Orban, who openly supports Russia.

“For the first time, Hungarians will have the opportunity in Europe to decide whether or not they support Ukraine’s accession to the EU,” Hungarian government spokesman Balaz Orban said.

What is the ‘guided’ system of national consultations

According to Politico, the Hungarian government often uses a “guided” polling system that gives expected results

These are postal campaigns in which all Hungarians at the age of vote receive letters that ask questions and invite them to choose from a list of answers – sometimes a simple yes or no.

The questions are often raised in a guide and the vast majority of the answers tend to be aligned with the government’s attitude.

For example, a national consultation on EU immigration policies in 2023 asked the Hungarians if they supported the creation of Brussels “Ghetto of Migrants” in Hungary. The poll participated less than 20%, but 99% of those who responded negatively responded.

The Hungarian opposition and civil society reject these polls as propaganda tools.

The results are not legally binding, but are used to strengthen the positions of the Orban government on divisive issues, which, he says, argues the majority of the electorate.
