US Minister of Transport Sean Duffy He said on Tuesday that the ministry would impose permanent restrictions to prevent helicopter flight near Washington’s Ragan Airport when two less used landing corridors operate, a move that followed the air collision in January 67.

Duffy said he responds to an emergency security recommendation by the National Transport Security Council (NTSB), which had reported ‘Risk of conflict between helicopters in the air’according to a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration mentioned for the first time by Reuters.

Duffy said he would also adopt another Council recommendation, that FAA would create an alternative route that can be used by helicopters when the two secondary runways are used at Ragan Airport.

The NTSB President, Jennifer Homedi, said in a press conference that previous rules for the two less used corridors at Rigan Airport create ‘Unbearable risk for aviation safety’saying that they could maintain just 23 meters away from a helicopter or from a plane approaching one of these corridors.

In the wake of the crash on January 29 between the American Airlines passenger aircraft and military helicopter Black Hawk over the Potomac River in Washington, FAA temporarily prohibited most helicopters near the airport – located in Arlington, Virginia – until it can control it.

Black Hawk, carrying a three -member crew, collided with the American Airlines jet, which included 64 passengers and crew members, with debris sinking into the river. There were no survivors.

After the crash, FAA imposed a temporary restriction which prevented civilian planes from being in the same area when police, medical, or presidential helicopters should use the airspace around Ragan National Airport.

The recommendation of the NTSB would allow helicopters to fly when planes use runway 1 at the airport, which manages about 90% of the airport traffic.

Airlines for America, a group representing the American Airlines And other US carriers last week urged FAA to permanently reduce the helicopter traffic around the airport. The team called on FAA to suspend some nearby helicopter routes with limited exceptions for basic military or medical emergencies.

The Airline Group wants FAA to evaluate whether helicopter routes that may be crossed by airplane flights to Reagan could be removed from commercial traffic. He also urged FAA to immediately revise air traffic near large airports. FAA is re -examining helicopter routes to serve other airports.

US Secretary of Transport Sean Duffy has called for unnecessary military helicopter flights near Ragan Airport.

“If we have generals flying with helicopters for convenience through this airspace, this is not acceptable. Get a suburb and drive – you don’t have to take a helicopter ‘, he said.
