The bill will extend state funding by the end of the financial year on September 30
The Republican -controlled House of Representatives approved the third bill to maintain funding funding last Friday, even when President Donald Trump is dramatically cutting the government’s expenses, according to Reuters.
The bill was approved by almost 217-213 party vote, with a Republican voting not a democratic yes.
The ongoing resolution, which largely maintains government funding at its current level by September 30should be voted on by the Senate by the majority of Republicans and signed by Trump to law until Friday to avoid the cut.
Trump pushed Republicans to reconcile and the Vice President Jay Di Vance He urged them to remain united in a meeting in camera on Tuesday morning.
Hard -core Republican legislators are traditionally opposed to suspension measures, known as CR, and Tuesday’s vote marked the first time that many of them voted in favor, since the party took over the majority in Parliament in January 2023.
The Republican Representative Tim Berschet He said he first voted in favor of a CR because he would reduce federal spending.
“This is the first time I am here … we actually voted to reduce the size of the government”said the Tennessee legislator, who entered Congress in January 2019.
Berset, who spent much of the day saying he was undecided, chose to support the measure after talking to Trump, adding: “The leadership never lied to me and Trump never told me.”
The democratic representative Rosa Delauro criticized the measure. “It’s not a simple attitude that holds the lights on and the doors open. This is the Republican leadership that delivers the keys to the government and a white check to Ilon Musk and President Trump »he said.
A Republican, Hard -core Representative Thomas Massi From Kentucky, not a democratic voted, the moderate Jared Golden Maine, voted yes.
Senate Republicans will need at least seven Democrats to vote with them to avoid delaying funding, which could disturb everything, from financial supervision to scientific research and force hundreds of thousands of federal workers to be left without pay.
Many of these workers have already been pressured by Trump’s “raw” campaign to reduce US public administration ranks and, consequently, costs.
The Senate Democrats have opposed the bill, but they also have a historical criticism of their reactions against the government’s cuts that say it hurts their voters.
At least 100,000 of the 2.3 million citizens of the government have either been fired or redeemed so far and Trump has virtually closed the services that manage foreign assistance and consumer protection. The Trump government also ordered a second round of layoffs, with plans expected later this week.
The Democrats say that the effort to reduce Trump’s staff contradicts Congress’s power in spending.
The bill will extend state funding by the end of the financial year on September 30. Defense increases, veterans care and border safety will be offset by cuts in some domestic programs.
