A second mass Russian attack is possible, says Zelensky’s adviser

London, Thanasis Gavos

His advisor Ukrainian President Zelensky appreciated speaking at British Politico how the Russian army could attempt one second wave of attacks against his goals after he has regrouped forces.

In his interview with Alexander Rodnyansky said Ukrainian military successes in the first three weeks of the war, especially in northern Ukraine, had forced the Russians to change strategythat is, to resort to indiscriminate remote bombing.

“It seems that over the last week or so their strategy has been adjusted to reduce their losses. About a week ago they already had almost 13,000 deaths according to our estimates. In the week that has passed, their deaths have risen to about 14,000. “In other words, the rate of their losses has slowed down and this reveals some changes in their strategy,” said the Ukrainian presidential adviser.

Regarding the possibility of a new mass attack, Mr. Rodnjanski said that the warning signs are there in the “intensified” violence against her Mariupol and in increasingly indiscriminate attacks with many civilian deaths. “It’s part of their strategy. Obviously not a coincidence. We must watch what happens in the face of such a second Russian attack. “There is a danger that it will happen, so we must be careful,” he commented.

Mr. Rodnyansky also estimated that due to the failure of the Russians to occupy large cities, the use of chemical weapons has become “from a very technical but inhumane point of view” a possible strategic choice for the invaders.

“The Russian army is obviously very incapable of capturing these cities without huge damage or loss of troops. So one way to bypass this from a heartless military perspective is to use chemical or biological weapons, which would obviously kill the entire population but leave the infrastructure intact. “This is what they did in Syria when they had similar problems, which I could not understand in the cities,” he added.

He noted, however, that the difference with Syria is that every move of the Russian army in Ukraine is revealed.

Mr Rodnyansky also said that possible use of chemical weapons by Russia should be considered by the West as a “violation of a red line” as a weapon of mass destruction. In such a case, he noted, there will be “some kind of operation”.

As for the negotiationsthe Ukrainian presidential adviser said some things are “relatively easy” to agree onsuch as about Ukrainian neutrality provided there is a compromise on them security guarantees. But there are others much more difficultas the Respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity in Donetsk and Luhansk.

“Relatively easy” also included “de-Naziization” of Ukrainian city street names and respect for the Russian language, demands he described as “communication tricks” by Moscow to “sell” some successes to the Russian population.

However, Mr Rodnjanski expressed personal concern that Russia uses talks to save time to prepare for new attacks and escape further sanctions from the West.

He also noted that since the United States does not block Ukrainian airspace, a “compromise” would be supply to the Ukrainian forces of a very advanced anti-aircraft systemsomething of the S-300, S-400 or Patriot system level.

Mr. Rodnjanski called for an end to a pan-European embargo against Russian oil and gas, revealing that he will go to Germany to discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, speaking this morning on BBC radio Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine Igor Zofkua said the request delivery of Mariupol submitted by the Russians turned down despite the promise of humanitarian corridors, because “the Russians never keep their promises.” He referred to the previous bombings against civilians who were leaving the city.

Mr Zofkua added that he would like to see President Biden visit Kyiv: “He must show courage and bravery, like the three prime ministers who visited the city and like the Ukrainian president.”
