It is recalled that the market from Ankara earlier in Russian S-400 air defense systems brought US sanctions and the removal of Turkey from the F-35 fighter aircraft program in 2019.

President Erdogan has said that regional and global developments are demanding increasing consultations between Turkey and the US on all issues, that Turkey is supporting the US President’s decisive initiatives to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and that it is struggling for a war.

Erdogan also stressed during the conversation that it is important for the two countries to contribute to the restoration of stability in Syria, the operation of the new administration and the removal of sanctions against Syria in order to normalize the situation and that this will allow the Syrians to return to their homeland. The Turkish president pointed out that steps are expected by the US to fight terrorism in the interests of Turkey.

In the battle against the Islamic State in Syria, the US has allied with a Syrian Kurdish militia that Turkey considers a terrorist group. Turkey has strongly criticized this US attitude as a betrayal of a NATO ally.
