Patricia Lopez is Bloomberg columnist – Donald Trump’s main goal, according to analysts, is to privatize the economy
Republicans have long believed that the private sector can provide the services offered by the federal government better, faster or cheaper.
Therefore, it should not be surprised by the fact that Finance Minister Scott Beset recently revealed a wider agenda that sheds light on the seemingly indiscriminate cuts by Administrative Personnel and Services by the Trump government. The main goal of President Donald Trump, according to Beset, is to “re -energize the economy”.
This sheds additional light on the Mask Musk and the unofficial government efficiency service with the aim of reducing services and assigning others to the much more loosely regulated private sector. Morgan Stanley himself proposed that the government be privatized “as much as possible” at a recent Morgan Stanley conference.
Doge cuts so far are not enough to make a difference in national debt or to offset the proposed tax cuts for the rich. Nor do they make the government more efficient, which would require a serious evaluation. There is no evidence that “fraud, waste and abuse” claiming to discover Musk corresponds to more than spending with which he and Trump disagree.
But as a means to move the country closer to mass privatization of services? Now the cuts seem reasonable. There is no much need for a strong national meteorological service if the weather forecast is entrusted to private companies. The same is true for the US Post Office, which Trump wishes to privatize despite being protected by the Constitution.
But cuts like these will create a significant disruption to American society, especially in the country where Trump is more popular. Norman Ornstein, a policy analyst at the Conservative Institute of American Business, said he had never seen such fast and extensive efforts before. “The people who will suffer the most are those who live in the red states,” he said. “But we will begin to see horror stories all over the country. People who do not believe that what the government is doing do not concern them will find out what it means when there is no longer a safety net, no protection, no stage 4 clinical experiment because private companies will not fund it. “
The problem with privatization is that it rarely works. Private companies operate with different criteria from the federal government. Their main goal is to maximize profit.
Think of the post office service. The post office must arrive in every corner and village of the US, no matter how remote it is. In a report to privatize the postal service, Wells Fargo proposes that the costly “universal service obligation” be abolished. Delivery to “unprofitable” areas, such as rural areas, could be periodically or completely stopped. Trump won 63% of the vote in rural areas and small cities.
In many rural areas, postmen are a lifeline, bringing vital recipes to the elderly who are either locked at home or away from a pharmacy. The Ministry of Veterans, for example, covers 80% of its prescriptions through postal service. The transition to the private mail delivery could reduce accessibility and increase prices. About 6 out of 10 veterans voted for Trump.
Or let’s get the education. Trump ordered Education Minister Linda McManon, a former supporter of the professional struggle without practical training, to close the ministry or bring it as close as possible to it. The ministry spends most of its money to help students in rural areas, students with disabilities and students from low income mattresses. The majority of low -income Americans voted for Trump.
Trump has also prioritized school coupons, which allow families to use money from public school taxes to send their children to private schools. However, coupons rarely cover private school tuition and other expenses such as books, uniforms and transport. More importantly, these schools can choose students, leaving a few options for students with disabilities or special needs. When a referendum in November, voters in Nebraska, Kentucky and Colorado rejected the coupons.
Then there is the weather forecast, which is critical to address the effects of extreme weather. Although Musk fired more than 1,300 workers from the National Ocean and Atmosphere (NOAA), which includes the National Weather Service and the Hurricane Center, NOAA is now called upon to dismiss another 1,000 people. It is a loss of 20% of its staff in less than two months.
The Conservative Project 2025 provides for the abolition of NOAA and the complete “commercialization” of its functions. But private companies cannot reproduce the complex network of satellites, research and partnerships available by Noaa, even if they could afford the cost. And the companies that may have done so would decide to take back their investment by charging more for storm warnings, for example.
Again, Trump’s voters themselves will take on the greatest weight. An AP analysis has shown that red states have received 15% more help than the federal government per capita since 2011 because they were exposed slightly more on natural disasters – such as hurricanes that hit Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Missouri, Missouri.
Conservatives have been trying to privatize state services for at least 40 years, but with Trump and Musk, they have found the opportunity.
As soon as the ministries and services are stripped of Musk and Trump, they will be too weak to fulfill their missions. And if companies undertake to provide these basic services, the public may find that it is impossible to pay for them.
