A teenager who was injured in November when she collapsed at the Novi Sant City Station in Serbia, succumbed to his injuries today, raising the number of dead from the tragedy that led to mass demonstrations and the resignation of the Prime Minister.
The patient, identified by the Military Medical Academy (VMA) in Belgrade with his initials, 18, was one of the three injured from the ruins on November 1st. One of them died 16 days later, and the other remains in the hospital.
“Despite all treatment measures – and the maximum dedication of VMA staff, the patient succumbed to complex trauma and the resulting complications”said the hospital in a statement.
Many in Serbia have linked the disaster in Novi Sad with extensive difference and maladministration. Authorities and President Aleksandar Vucic and the ruling Serbian progressive party deny these charges.
The disaster has also led to mass demonstrations by students and opposing government policies across the country, including a huge rally last week in Belgrade.
The prosecutor’s office has charged 13 people in the case of Novi Sad’s case, and the government has announced a campaign against corruption. Prime Minister Milos Vutchevic and two ministers have resigned, causing the government to collapse. The president will now have to appoint a new prime minister or call early elections.
