Germany considers a return to telecommuting in the face of new wave of Covid

Germany is said to be preparing to return to the home office work regime, according to a bill that the AFP had access to on Sunday (14), in a context of unprecedented increase in coronavirus infections.

The reintroduction of the measure, which had been suppressed in July, comes as the country is facing the fourth wave of the virus, which is again worrying European Union leaders.

Since mid-October, infections and deaths have soared in the European country, while the vaccination campaign has already immunized 67% of the population.

With 289 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Germany recorded this Sunday a record incidence rate since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

“The next wave will eclipse all the previous ones,” the regional official for Saxony, the most affected nationwide, said in an interview with the weekly publication Bild am Sonntag.

According to the draft of the project, companies will be obliged to offer the option of telecommuting if there is no “imperative work reason” to show up at the workplace.

In addition, people who will work in person must prove that they are immunized or that they have tested negative for the virus.

The German government is also preparing measures to limit access to certain events to people who are vaccinated or have recovered from the disease and may test negative, according to local media reports.
