Members and supporters of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) of the Turkish opposition today are coming to the constituency in a qualifying electoral process to ratify the candidacy of the arrested mayor of Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglou in the following presidential elections.

The CHP called on citizens who are not members of the party to vote to enhance the resistance after the arrest of Imamoglou, who is accused, inter alia, of corruption and support for terrorist organization, as Reuters reports. Imamoglu denies the charges against him.

The CHP, which has over 1.5 million members, has set up 5,600 ballot boxes in all 81 provinces of Turkey. The vote ends at 16.00 hours of Greece.

The next presidential election in the country are scheduled for 2028.

Earlier, prosecutors asked a Turkish court to order the detention of Imamoglou and his other four of his associates, in view of their own in two distinct cases of “corruption” and “terrorism”, the services of the elected and leader of the Turkish opposition announced. The court is expected today to decide whether to remain in custody.
