“Great damage to houses” reported in Arabia, a suburb east of New Orleans, the St. Bernard Parish’s sheriff’s office said via Facebook.
“Rescue operations are under way to help residents trapped inside their homes,” he added.

“State agencies are assisting local officials in assessing the damage and consequences of this tornado,” said Louisiana Gov. John Bell Edwards.
The tornado was created by a series of storms that hit the southern USA yesterday. Other tornadoes were spotted in eastern Texas earlier in the day and more were likely to strike “in the next few hours,” NWS warned.
