On the occasion of the second anniversary of the start of the war in Sudan, UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres presented a gloomy picture of a collapsing country, stressing that Sudan is experiencing a “Crisis of shocking dimensions, with civilians paying the highest price.”

Condemned them “Bombings and air raids” affecting not only military targets, but also “markets, hospitals, schools, worship venues and displaced camps”. Spoke about ‘Uncontrolled sexual violence’especially at the expense of women and girls and in ‘Serious violations’ committed by both warring parts.

The humanitarian effects, he stressed, are unprecedented. “Nearly 12 million people have left their homes” said and stressed that it is the ‘Greater displacement crisis in the world’ With over 3.8 million having crossed the border.

According to the UN Secretary -General, it is also alarming that ‘Half of the population – about 25 million people – suffers from hunger’ With starvation already identified in five areas and is expected to spread.

Although the UN and its partners provided assistance to ‘Over 15.6 million people’ Last year, attempts are blocked by “The ongoing conflict, bureaucratic obstacles and drastic funding cuts”. Basic services have “collapsed” with millions of children not having access to education and most health centers being shut down in the most affected areas.

The Secretary -General underlined that “The civilians continue to have the consequences of contempt for human life”. He also called on the warring sides to comply with their commitments on the basis of the May 2023 Declaration, pointing out that these promises ‘Have to be converted into tangible deeds’while they are necessary “Independent, impartial and transparent investigations” For all complaints of violations.

He also appealed to the end of external intervention. ‘Outdoor support and weapons flow must stop’ noted and urged those who have influence to use it “To improve the life of the people in Sudan and not to perpetuate this disaster.”

The UN strategy focuses on “overall, repetitive and well -coordinated political efforts” to avoid further splitting the country.

Secretary -General reiterated that Sudan is ‘Highest priority for the United Nations’ and highlighted the continued diplomatic mission of his special envoy, Ramishwhich aims to “Strengthen and support citizens along the way to a common vision of Sudan’s future.”

Mr Guterres appealed to the international community to end the war.

“The world should not forget the people of Sudan” emphasized.
