New law, which prohibits Israelis from traveling to their territory because of what is played in Gauzethe Maldives government ratified.

“The Maldives government confirms its decisive solidarity with the Palestinians and its constant commitment to promote and protect the rights of the Palestinian people,” said President Mohamed Muizzu’s office.

The proposal, first made in June, prompted a representative of the Israeli Foreign Ministry to recommend to Israelis to leave the Maldives and avoid traveling there in the future.

Israeli citizens with a second passport will still be able to enter the country, according to the Maldives Migration Service.

Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the islands in 2024.

The Maldives are a Muslim majority nation and the country’s constitution restricts other religious practices.

Other countries of South Asiaincluding Bangladesh and Pakistan, have also banned the entry into Israeli passport owners, as well as some countries in North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. But the Maldives seem to be the first to adopt such a measure in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

The Maldives have recognized Israel in the 1960s, but have sporadically suspended diplomatic relations and have not maintained complete diplomatic relationships in recent years.
