International Atomic Energy Agency Appeal: Need to Prevent Nuclear Accident in Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is seriously concerned for the “safety of nuclear installations [της Ουκρανίας]The General Director of the Organization stressed on Wednesday.

In a dramatic statement, Rafael Mariano Grossi said that “the need to prevent a nuclear accident is becoming more urgent with each passing day”, calling on the authorities to allow IAEA experts and equipment to evaluate Ukraine’s nuclear reactors.

Russia took control of the abandoned Chernobyl power plant in February, and on Tuesday Ukraine warned that Russian control was hampering efforts to control forest fires within the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Ukraine has 15 nuclear reactorsseveral of which are now under Russian control, and Grossi said the IAEA hopes to send experts to “ensure the safety of its nuclear facilities and prevent the risk of a serious accident that could threaten both humans and the environment”.
