They criticize “the unprecedented government overrun and political intervention that are now jeopardizing American Higher Education”
More than 100 presidents of universities, college and academic companies in the US today issued a joint statement declaring their opposition to the way in which the Donald Trump government treats Higher Education Foundations, after Harvard.
The announcement – signed by, among other things, by the Rectors of Princeton, Brown, the University of Hawaii and the State College of Contetikt – reflects “the unprecedented government transcendence and the political intervention that are now at risk”.
“We are open to constructive reforms and are not opposed to legal government supervision,” they say. “However, we have to oppose excessive government intervention in the lives of those who learn, live and work in our campuses,” they add.
Today’s announcement is the latest attempt to resist the efforts of the Trump government to use state subsidies as a means to put pressure on them to proceed with the reforms it wishes.
On April 14, Harvard rejected the claims of the US government, and shortly thereafter it became known that federal funding of $ 2.3 billion was freezing the university.
According to White House spokesman Harrison Fildz, Trump wants to ensure that taxpayers’ money does not support racial discrimination or racially motivated violence.
The US government also threatened the well -known university that it will abolish the exception provided by taxes and fees, as well as its ability to accept foreign students.
Yesterday Harvard appealed to justice against the Trump government in an attempt to force her to lift the subsidy freezes and to withdraw the requests she has made, accusing the White House of trying to “review Harvard and Harvadi’s way of managing reasons.
Following his return to the White House in January, Trump threatens to cut federal funding of universities that accuses of tolerate anti -Semitism in their premises and failed to protect Jewish students during the proximity of philosopher protests or programs.
The US Department of Education sent a letter to 60 universities in March- including Harvard, Northwestern and Cornella- warning that they may take legal action against them under the Civil Rights Act if they do not protect their Jews.
Columbia, based in New York, was one of the Republican’s first goals, but the university quickly agreed to proceed with the drastic reforms demanded by the government.
In addition to the deprivation of federal resources by universities, members of the ICE have arrested foreign students in recent weeks who have participated in demonstrations and are trying to start a process for their deportation.
