In a social media post, Barack Obama referred to the work and heir left behind by Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, on Easter Monday, mourning the Christian world.

“Pope Francis was the rare leader who made us want to become better people. With his humility and his gestures at the same time simple and deep – by embracing the sick, decorating the homeless, he washed the legs of young prisoners – he pulled us out of our complacency and reminded us that we are all committed to the US.

“Today, Michelle and I mourn with all – Catholics and not – who have drawn strength and inspiration from the Pope’s example. May we continue to obey his call “never stay on the sidelines of this course of vibrant hope” concludes Barack Obama.

In March 2014, Barack Obama visited Pope Francis in the Vatican as US president.

Subsequently, in September 2015, Pontiff retaliated the visit and Obama welcomed Pope Francis to the White House (central photo).
