How war in Ukraine can accelerate or derail transition to green energy; listen to podcast

by

In addition to impacting the prices of commodities such as wheat and oil around the world, the war in Ukraine has exposed Europe’s energy sector’s dependence on Russia – where 25% of the continent’s oil and 40% of gas come from.

That is why the bloc has difficulties imposing sanctions on Russian oil as the United States did. Against this backdrop, European leaders have already started announcing plans to lessen Moscow’s energy dependence — and that involves accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.

At the same time, the conflict has made the European Union bet in the short term on an even more polluting energy: coal. This has already led the United Nations to issue an alert to countries on the continent.

In this Thursday’s episode (24), Café da Manhã talks with professor of the Energy Planning Program at UFRJ Maurício Tolmasquim about how war impacts global energy supply and what effects conflict can have on the transition to renewable sources.
