According to the WHO, one in four women are experiencing violence in her relationship. Linda managed to escape a abusive relationship – thanks to social media.

Luran wears beige pumps and pants, sits cross -legged on a stool and, with a dim smile, reads to the public some of the comments of hatred that write under her video on Tiktok: “You weigh 50kg and your tits are four times.” The audience bursts into laughter.

Luran is invited to Monday Talks, a feminist series of speeches at a Berlin Bar, in Nickel. The event is undertaken by activist Alina Cul. All speakers are active in Tiktok. The bar is suffocating.

Feminism on social media

Luran does not seem to have been anxious – and does not lose her humor: as in Tiktokhe talks about the reasons that lead women trapped in abusive relationships. And she talks openly about her own experiences. “I spoke publicly to Tiktok about my last relationship: how they abused me and humiliated me how I experienced sexual and physical violence. And I think more women should speak openly, because silence only protects the perpetrators, “she says.

He explains that violence did not suddenly emerge one day, but began gradually: “He started with simple things, such as lack of support for pregnancy and with children,” he says. She peaked when she was pregnant with her third child, when her partner hit her and threatened to kill her, drunk.

Hope from social media

Isolated and desperate, he found support through YouTube, watching stories of other women. “These videos gave me courage,” Luran says. So he made the decision to break up. One and a half years later, in 2019, he finally left the relationship, began studying and working, and began talking to Tiktok about what he lived.

Tiktok, he says, is a place where you can tell your story and learn from other women. Through Tiktok she began to realize that these are problems that other women are facing, often immigrants. And most of all, that she is not alone.

And now she is sitting at a feminist event at a strangled Berlin bars and laughs cynically with the comments of hatred she receives on the internet. A woman from the public asks her if she ever thought of giving up because of the attacks on Tiktok. Luran does not need much to find the answer: “If even a woman sees my content and manages to escape a toxic relationship, then it is worth continuing.”
