Nelson de Sá: Chinese Chancellor arrives in India, marking rapprochement around Russia

by

Featured by Indian newspapers such as Dainik Jagran and Hindustan Times, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Thursday night (24), to meet with colleague S Jaishankar and other officials.

Recorded on video by the ANI agency (below), his presence divided the headlines in the country with India’s vote in the UN General Assembly, abstaining once again in a proposal against Russia. And with the justification of the Indian position by Jaishankar, saying it is for peace.

It is Wang’s first visit since the 2020 border conflict, with soldiers killed on both sides. It was preceded, the day before, by a criticism by the Indian chancellor of the Chinese, after he made comments in Pakistan about Kashmir, an Indian region with a Muslim majority.

Despite the controversial context, the meeting was preceded by expectations in both countries, with texts putting forward what each intends to put on the table. It was also followed in the West, by Bloomberg, Reuters and others.

Times of India and India Narrative have published articles indicating that New Delhi wants to restore the status quo at the border, changed after 2020. And the Chinese Global Times, from Beijing, noted that India’s easing of restrictions on Chinese investments would be “a very positive development”.
