Shortly before the second round, the Constitutional Court decided to annul the first, due to funding irregularities
The Romanians are today called to the polls to repeat last year’s presidential election, five months after the cancellation due to irregularities.
The constituencies opened at 06:00 (local time; at 07:00 Greek time) and will close at 20:00 (19:00).
If necessary, there will be a second round on May 18th.
The parties of the ruling Romanian coalition agreed to jointly support a candidate, the liberal party announced tonight.
The elections are important because in Romania the president of the country is the one who makes decisions on foreign policy and security policy.
Far -right favorite
Polls want Jorman Simon, a candidate for the far -right alliance for the Romanian Union (Aur, the acronym forms the word “gold” in Romanian) is most likely to be the winner.
However, none of the 11 candidates are expected to secure the absolute majority today, which means that there will probably be a second round between the two dominant ones.
In the November elections, in the first round, the farm candidate for Russia, Kalin Giorzescu, who held a campaign via Tiktok, prevailed in the first round.
However, shortly before the second round was held, the Constitutional Court ruled the annulment of the former due to irregularities in funding the election campaign.
Georgescu was banned from re -nominating the post, and the prosecutor’s office began to conduct a investigation against him for submitting false statements to finance his campaign.
It is not clear which of the other candidates will take second place in today’s vote.
The candidate for the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the conservative-liberal mayor of the Bucharest Nicusor Dan and the former Prime Minister of Social Democrats Victor Ponta are all considered her contenders.
The favorite, Mr Simon, says that his main purpose if he wins will be to guarantee a “justice” for Mr Giorzescu. He has not ruled out the possibility of calling him prime minister.
