Tikhanovskaya urges Belarusian troops not to attack Ukraine

by

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a key figure in Belarus ‘opposition, today urged her country’ s forces not to take part in the Russian – led invasion of Ukraine, and greeted volunteers fighting alongside the Ukrainians.

“The Belarusian soldiers understand that the Ukrainians are our brothers and sisters and we do not want to fight them,” Tikhanovskaya told a meeting with the Belarusian community in Warsaw.

“We do not want to become enemies,” she added.

Belarus has provided Moscow with a strategic advantage by allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine through its territory, but has so far not been directly involved in the conflict.

Belarus’s troops “do not share the responsibility of the Lukashenko regime’s actions,” Tikhanovskaya said.

Belarus’s opposition leader has praised her country’s volunteers, who are fighting alongside the Ukrainians.

“We are very proud of them. “They are defending Ukraine’s independence, but they are also defending our future.”
