The Columbia University was once again turned into a battlefield with New York Police arresting dozens of pro -Palestinian protesters after taking part of the University’s central library yesterday, Wednesday.

Two university security officers were injured when protesters violently stormed into the Butler Library, according to a statement by University President Claire Sipman, who described their actions as “outrageous”.

A video published on social media showed protesters entering the library, many of whom were wearing scarves and masks, defying the ban on Trump government that the use of a face mask is not allowed.

Claire Sipman said she asked for help from New York Police and added that many of the protesters were not students.

More than 70 protesters arrested Police, the Columbia Spectator newspaper on campus said.

“At the immediate request of Columbia University, New York Police (NYPD) responds to an ongoing situation on the campus where people have occupied a library and invading the New York Police in X.

Video from protests showed protesters vandalizing libraries by writing “Free Palestine”.

Another video showed public security officers blocking the exit of the library and asking those who were inside to show their student identities would otherwise be arrested.

Columbia’s president said that while the protest was confined to a room in the library, “it is completely unacceptable that some people choose to disrupt academic activities as our students study and prepare for the final exams.”

Sipman, who took up her duties in March after the resignation of the previous president, asked the students to stay away from the library.

“We will not tolerate hatred or violence in any form in our city,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams in a post on X.

In a social media post, protesters accused the University of “violent repression” and said they refused to show their identities to the police and public security officers at the campus.

Columbia University has caused the anger of US President Donald Trump, who claims that many universities have tolerated anti -Semitism and harassment of Jewish students.

Trump has already threatened to withhold about $ 400 million from federal funding for Columbia, as his government continues to expel those involved in previous protests on campus.

In March, Columbia agreed on various demands by the Trump government, including a ban on using a face mask in protests and a change in the supervision of certain academic programs, after the government said it was planning to withhold federal capital.

The Trump government has warned 60 universities that funding may be canceled if allegations of anti -Semitism in campuses are not addressed.
