Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO, two blocks with which Ukraine maintains a close alliance in its war with Russia. However, there has been tension in relations between the two countries several times.

Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban is cautious about providing Western aid to Ukraine. He has also maintained relationships with Vladimir Putin, which has led him to confront most of the other European leaders, trying to isolate the Russian president after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
