New German Foreign Minister Johann Vandefularrived in Israel on Saturday for his first visit abroad after taking up his duties.

Vandeful met with relatives of Israeli hostages who are still being held in the Gaza Strip from Hamas, while having dinner with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Tel Aviv. Before leaving for Israel, the German Foreign Minister had requested that a truce between Israel and Hamas be held immediately, given the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza has now become unbearable,” he said. “For this reason, there is an urgent urgent negotiations for a truce, with the aim of releasing hostages and conditions for helping to the people of Gaza.”he added.

In addition, Vandeful reiterated Germany’s support for the two states. “The prospect of the solution of the two states, according to which a Palestinian state will coexist peacefully next to Israel-however far it looks like-remains the best opportunity for peace and security for Israel and its neighbors.”noted, while stressing that “There must be no obstacles.”

Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas oppose this solution. Today, Vandeful is scheduled to meet Netanyahu and Saar in Israel, as well as with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa in Ramala on the occupied West Bank.

The German minister also intends to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Monument in Jerusalem.

Vandeful said he would ask Israeli officials about “the strategic goals of military operations, which have re -intensified” since March 18 when Israel reiterated the Gaza Strip bombing.

Vadeful’s visit takes place as the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel are celebrated. Today Israeli President Isaac Hertzog is expected in Berlin for an official visit. Hertsog will return to Israel on Tuesday, accompanied by his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
