Chancellor Mertz’s term has begun difficult, but low expectations may become an opportunity to overcome prejudices. Merkel was not present in the critical vote for the 10th Chancellor, due to another obligation.
Chancellor Mertz may have begun wrong, but the low expectations that accompany him are his opportunity to reject prejudice. Comment by Kostas Argyros.
Angela Merkel was not ultimately forced to see what she had repeatedly attempted to prevent. He was present in the Budestag theaters last Tuesday morning, when Friedrich Mertz failed his first attempt to be elected Chancellor. But he then left the room because of another obligation and thus “lost” the afternoon vote, when some of the 18 naughty MPs of the government majority returned to the party line and secured 325 votes the necessary majority for the Germans.
We will never know who these 18 were, and most of all how many of them came from the Christian Union and how many from the Social Democratic Party.
‘We look forward’
The leaderships of the two parliamentary groups, but also Merz himself, as well as the Social Democratist Vice -Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Kleningbail reiterated in the following hours and days that they would not deal with the search for guards. Better they said to forget this tricycle and look forward. They are not unfair.
It would be devastating to awaken the detective inside them and begin to spend on theories about who and why, which would probably be directed to the opposite side, poisoning a climate between the coalition partners who are not the best.
This has nothing to do with the top, since Merz and Kleningbale, seem to mean it when they reiterate that they have found “chemistry” between them. This helps certainly the fact that Klingbail comes from the SPD’s conservative wing, and Mertz was willing to compromise in order to make a reality that was a dream of a life for two decades. Problems with “chemistry” have to do with the middle -aged and the basis of both parties, where the moans are much louder than whispers so that the leaders have not been recorded.
Consequently, the stroke of the first vote has not improved the climate, nor is it certain that it can work adhesives for the “small -scale” coalition, as one could describe it by comparing it to the past. Base discomfort is also reflected in the measurements of how German society sees this government and this Chancellor as a whole. In the “trends” poll of the first Public Television channel, only 32% considers Mertz a good choice for office. Poor choice considers him 59%.
Low the bar
But because they all have two sides, this can be the great advantage of the new Chancellor if it knows how to exploit it. When expectations are low it is easy to pass over the bar. The same could be said about Tuesday’s passion.
It is not in politics that “the good day in the morning seems”. There have been many good days that have come to an end. What Mertz and Klingbail need is to forget about the “crashing” they may have felt in their not short confidence and see it as a useful warning. To leave the self -references and look for what they are missing to gain the trust of both their Members as much as society. There let them also employ virtues of detective.
