Johnson: Ukraine can win – In a sense, Putin has already lost

London, Thanasis Gavos

Ukraine can “certainly win” without this being easy against Vladimir Putin’s unconscious actions, he said. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on BBC Newsnight on Thursday night.

Asked to clarify what he meant by victory, however, Mr Johnson acknowledged that a Ukrainian victory would rather mean that Russian occupation of the country would become “impossible” due to resistance, rather than a Ukrainian dominance on the battlefield.

“In a sense, Putin has already lost.” The British Prime Minister added, because he did not expect so much resistance and underestimated the national spirit of the Ukrainians, which in fact strengthened with his invasion.

Referring to military developments, Boris Johnson said that the Russians are doing what is their specialty, that is, staying away from the enemy and “ruthlessly” bombing cities. That is why, he added, the West must help the Ukrainians destroy the Russian equipment that allows these long-range bombings.

For President Zelensky said he was great at mobilizing his peoplelike Churchill, also doing what the historic British leader did, namely to use all his diplomatic ability to get the support of his allies.

He admitted that all NATO leaders feel the anxiety of President Zelensky that no country talks about sending troops or aircraft to Ukraine, to create e.g. an ethereal exclusion zone, but stressed that global sympathy is stepping up aid to Kyiv and that Western armaments are helping to change the data on the battlefield.

In the long run, even Boris Johnson estimated that even if Ukraine does not become a full member of NATO, the West will offer so much armaments, training and security information that it will essentially create a deterrent against Russian aggression.

Asked about the peace talks, Mr Johnson said: “All countries want peace in Ukraine, but not Putin. He has decided to increase the bombing and try to ‘graze’ the big cities of Ukraine as he always did. “It’s a tragic mistake, but it seems to be trying right now.”

He dismissed the Kremlin accusation that he was the most anti-Russian leader, saying that this was not even the case. “I have always been a big Russophile, I am the only Prime Minister of the United Kingdom called Boris,” he said. He countered that the Putin regime was betraying Russia’s real interests and dealing a devastating blow to the reputation of that great country.
