Three builders lost their lives today when a stone wall collapsed and overwhelmed them in Pomar, a wine -growing village in eastern France.

A survey of negligent homicide in a workplace has been ordered, Dijon’s prosecutor Olivier Karakots told the French News Agency (AFP), who clarified that the victims were 45, 56 and 58 years old. They were doing work on a farm in the village of Pomar when an old stone wall collapsed and overwhelmed them.

Two local officials, who quickly reached the spot, tried to remove the ruins and unleash the unlucky workers. Rescuers made agonizing efforts to keep them alive, but to no avail.

The farm in which the accident occurred is surrounded by old stone walls, like many in this area near the famous Château de Pommard winery in Burgundy.

The builders’ union called for “security measures”, stressing that France is among countries with the highest rate of deaths in workplaces.

In 2023 more than 700,000 accidents at France were recorded in France, of which 555,000 were required. 759 people died in them, 21 more than 2022.
