The Swedish journalist arrested in Turkey at the end of March and was convicted of “insulting” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was released and returns to his country, Swedish Prime Minister Uphris Chryson said.
“The Swedish journalist Joachim Mentine is on his way from Turkey to Sweden. It will land in a few hours, “Christrson said in a post on the X platform.
“The persistent work, in relative quietness, was fruitful,” he added, thanking his European counterparts who “helped a lot in the process”.
The 40 -year -old Mentine, who works for the Dagens ETC newspaper, was arrested on March 27, when he arrived in Constantinople to cover the demonstrations that had begun the previous days on the occasion of the arrest of the city’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglou. At the end of April of Ankara, he was sentenced to 11 months in prison for a “chair’s insult”.
Despite the suspensive nature of the sentence, Mentine remained in prison, accused of “participating in a terrorist organization”.
The journalist denies the category of Turkish authorities. His prosecution was brought in because, according to Turkish justice, he participated in Stockholm in January 2023 in a demonstration of the Kurdistan Labor Party.
