Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone today with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and the two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine and the stage of negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, the Turkish presidency said.
Erdogan told Zelensky that he had stressed at the NATO summit his support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and that he had conveyed in bilateral talks there the “effective” diplomatic efforts Turkey has made, the statement said.
Earlier today, the Turkish presidentSpeaking to reporters on his return from the NATO summit in Brussels, Tayyip Erdogan spoke of “understanding” between Russia and Ukraine on four of the six issues on the table.
As reported by CNNthe Turkish president referred specifically to her issue withdrawal of Kiev from application for NATO membership but also the acceptance of Russian as one of the official languages of Ukraine.
“Zelensky also admitted it. “Russian is a language spoken almost everywhere in Ukraine, there is no problem here either,” Erdogan said.
Regarding Zelensky’s statements that a referendum should be held in case a compromise is reached with Moscow, Erdogan commented that they show a “smart leadership”.
For his forthcoming conversation with President Putin, he stressed that he should find a way to make a “decent exit” and that they would discuss and evaluate the NATO summit in Brussels.
“On the other hand, we (Turkey) certainly consider the use of weapons of mass destruction as a crime against humanity,” he added.
