El Salvador’s parliament approved a third law yesterday which also provides for enforcement of a tax of 30% in donations from international bodies to local organizations, in the context of a campaign of struggling ‘Foreign Agents’critics of the president’s government Nagib They complain that it is intended to silence NGOs.

The Congress of the Central America State, dominated by the presidential party, approved the law with 57 votes in favor of and three by. It will be implemented eight days after its publication in the Government Gazette.

Members of the Salvadorian national delegation have assured that the text will promote transparency in the way local organizations operate and their influence in the country. It provides for the creation of a register, in which non -governmental organizations will be required.

The funds secured by the new tax are intended to serve general, public and social interests, in accordance with the law.
